Challenge Day took place at Sanford High School and Middle School this week, reaching the entire 7th grade for a full day and an assembly at SHS. Challenge Day is typically a day-long interactive workshop where teens, teachers, and community members experience for themselves that compassion and connection are indeed possible in our schools. The goal of Challenge Day is to build community and to help stop teasing, violence, and alienation. Students and adults often leave Challenge Day inspired and empowered. This year's event was a huge success thanks to the efforts of approximately 56 volunteers, including staff members, school committee representatives, PTA members, community organizations, and local businesses. We are grateful to our sponsor, The Gerard and Gertrude Genest Charitable Trust, whose generous support made Challenge Day possible. Their commitment to empowering our students and fostering a positive school environment is commendable. Additionally, we extend our appreciation to our Diamond Sponsors, Kennebunk Savings, and MaineHealth, for their contribution to this event. Their support enabled us to provide snacks to the participants and ensured that the day was filled with positive energy.

The Building Trades Program at Sanford Regional Technical Center recently received a donation from Deering Lumber. Deering Lumber holds an annual golf tournament and has donated some of the proceeds to the program. Instructor Troy Hathaway says the funds can be used to do more individualized projects with students. He plans to have students build mock-up buildings to learn how to frame floors, walls, roofs, ceilings, and interior partitions. They will also learn how to install doors, windows, exterior and interior trim, drywall, and many other aspects of residential construction. Thank you, Deering Lumber for the generous donation!

The Sanford School Department has been selected as one of three districts in Maine to receive the First 10 Grant. This initiative, spearheaded by the Maine Department of Education (MDOE), is designed to engage parents, families, and the community in promoting school readiness. First 10 Schools and Communities are partnerships of school districts, elementary schools, early childhood programs, and community partners that collaborate to work on improving teaching, learning and care for young children.
