Good evening. This is a message from the Sanford School Department. Margaret Chase Smith School is scheduled to re-open on Tuesday, December 17, 2024. Our cleaning crews, teachers and staff have worked hard to prepare the school to re-open. Margaret Chase Smith School may look a little different in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade wings. Thank you to everyone for your patience as we work through this unexpected challenge.
🎵 The Performing Arts Center was alive with the sound of music last week as Sanford students showcased their incredible talents!
Our Middle School musicians kicked off the festivities on Wednesday, December 11th, with performances from grades 5-8 under the direction of Erica Scarano, Joshua Hyssong, and Kyle Hayes. From delightful duets to full ensemble pieces like "Santa the Barbarian and the Pirates of the North Pole," our young musicians shone bright!
The following evening, December 12th, Sanford High School's performers took center stage. Under the guidance of Ryan Geary and Hailey Francoeur, the choir and band ensembles delivered unforgettable performances.
From the Chorale's opening "Give Me Some Rhythm!" to the Concert Band's crowd-pleasing finale of "Sleigh Ride," the evening was filled with holiday spirit. A special moment came when alumni joined current students for "Auld Lang Syne"!
Congratulations to all our talented musicians and their dedicated directors for two spectacular evenings of music! 🎄🎺🎹

Sanford High School students in Ms. Baker's science class are diving deep into marine biology with a fascinating sea star dissection lab. Through this hands-on experience, students learn about the unique anatomy of these remarkable marine animals, including their distinctive water vascular system and ability to regenerate limbs!

The Maine Medical Association, along with several state healthcare organizations, is hosting an important virtual workshop focused on youth cannabis use and its impacts on adolescent health.
This educational session, "Cannabis Use in Adolescence: What Parents Need to Know," offers valuable information for parents and guardians in our community.

How did your experiences at Sanford help you reach your education and/or professional goals?
SHS offered many hands-on learning opportunities in the classroom and through numerous extra-curricular activities. Clubs such as Mock Trial, Young Adults Against Dating Abuse, The Civil Rights Team, and Key Club all gave me valuable life lessons and skills that I still utilize today on a regular basis. They showed me my passions, how to work alongside people from all walks of life, be an engaged member of my community, and advocate for what I know to be right.
What was the most valuable lesson you learned as a student at Sanford?
Failure is inevitable. We will all fail, but regardless of whether you fail or succeed, you should always be true to yourself. I ran for class president every conceivable time. Time after time, I lost until my senior year. When that announcement came over the intercom that I had won, the victory was sweet, but the proudest moment was all my peers and classmates coming up to me afterward and telling me why they voted for me. Each of them commented how they noticed that every time I lost an election, it didn’t impact my work; they continued to see me working at homecoming and prom, volunteering to do whatever I could for our class, and how they felt that I had earned the chance to serve as our class president. I stayed true to who I was and my classmates saw that.
