The Sanford School Department wishes the community a happy Memorial Day. Today is a day to honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, and to also support the family members of those we have lost. Today and every day, we’re inspired by all who have served this country.

The Student Leadership Team and JMG students attended the 5th Annual Student Leadership Conference at UNE last week. Here were some of their takeaways: treat people the way you want to be treated, be courageous, make goals, and be kind and sympathetic.

Sheila Dube from the Springvale Public library came to talk to Margaret Chase Smith K-3rd grade classrooms about the Summer Reading Program called All Together Now. Ms. Sheila brought her friend, Rocky the Raccoon, and spoke to students about the different happenings during the summer at the library in the children's room. During the summer, students have the ability to make kindness cards that get dispersed to different children's hospitals, nursing homes, and other organizations to spread kindness.

The SHS marching band practiced their Memorial Day marching outside the high school today!

Sanford High School’s band has been selected to represent the state of Maine in the “Semiquincentennial Salute to America” Independence Day Parade in Philadelphia on July 4th, 2026.
This parade is scheduled to mark America’s 250th Birthday Celebration right where our nation began in Philly. Sanford’s band was handpicked by the parade producer to represent Maine as he compiles a band from every state in the nation.
Leading up to 2026, the band will be fundraising to try and lower the cost of the trip. For anyone interested in helping with fundraisers or donating, they can contact Sanford Music Boosters at shsmusicboosters@gmail.com.
Congratulations!

Sanford Middle School music teachers attended the Maine Music Educators Association Conference last week in Orono. A highlight of the conference was having the National Association for Music Education President, Scott Sheehan, attend and give multiple speeches and clinics over the three-day conference. Another highlight was seeing Dee Ames receive recognition for her 40th year as a music teacher, a huge milestone! Dee brings so much energy and joy to the band program at Sanford Middle School that you would never know she's been teaching for 40 years! The impact she's had on her students can be seen through town, the children and grandchildren of former students in her classroom today. We are so grateful to have her, and we're honored that she was recognized for her longevity and contribution to music education at our state conference last week! Here she is pictured with our Maine Music Educators Association president, Andrew Forster, and National Association for Music Education President, Scott Sheehan.
