Najhaun Simpson, a Sanford Middle School 8th Grader, has taken on a unique role alongside School Resource Officer Joe Jourdain. Every morning from 7:15 a.m. to 7:40 a.m., Najhaun assists Officer Jourdain in the drop-off line in front of the school. Najhaun helps direct incoming traffic and allows students to cross the street on their way to the school safely. On one chilly Friday morning, Najhaun is waving for cars to come through and directing them to stop when students are crossing, all while providing infectious energy. As students walk into the school, Najhaun gives them his smile. More often than not, he'll give a student a fist bump as they walk in. His enthusiasm gives the students the extra jolt of positivity they need to continue their day. Officer Jourdain says Najhaun has that same personality all day long. "I have parents tell me that he makes their day, and love seeing him in the morning," Officer Jourdain said. "He brings a smile to everyone's face because that is just who he is." Before helping Officer Jourdain in the mornings, Sanford Middle School teacher Amy Greene Lamb said she had observed Najhaun greeting staff and students each morning in her wing of the building. She noticed how students' demeanors would instantly change when he said hello and waved and smiled. "Faces just light up! I've seen the same thing happen in the drop-off line!" she said.

Challenge Day took place at Sanford High School and Middle School this week, reaching the entire 7th grade for a full day and an assembly at SHS. Challenge Day is typically a day-long interactive workshop where teens, teachers, and community members experience for themselves that compassion and connection are indeed possible in our schools. The goal of Challenge Day is to build community and to help stop teasing, violence, and alienation. Students and adults often leave Challenge Day inspired and empowered. This year's event was a huge success thanks to the efforts of approximately 56 volunteers, including staff members, school committee representatives, PTA members, community organizations, and local businesses. We are grateful to our sponsor, The Gerard and Gertrude Genest Charitable Trust, whose generous support made Challenge Day possible. Their commitment to empowering our students and fostering a positive school environment is commendable. Additionally, we extend our appreciation to our Diamond Sponsors, Kennebunk Savings, and MaineHealth, for their contribution to this event. Their support enabled us to provide snacks to the participants and ensured that the day was filled with positive energy.

In honor of School Custodian Day, the Sanford School Department would like to recognize our custodial and maintenance staff's hard work over the summer to make our educational environment clean, safe, and inviting to everyone. The summer is actually the busiest time of the year for the custodial and maintenance crew because they have ten weeks to turn the buildings around and be ready for students and staff in the fall. They deep cleaned every area of our buildings, including washing and removing all the furniture from every room. They then cleaned the rooms from the top down, including lights, windows, and walls, and ended with refinishing the floors or washing the carpets. They also did minor facility repairs, light bulb replacements, and paint touch-ups. During the summer, they also have to attend to daily custodial needs with programs such as Extended School Year, Summer Food Service, and Summer Camps going on. They also created a new welcoming vestibule at Carl J. Lamb School with upgraded LED lights, a new ceiling, and an updated reception counter. Additionally, they painted and gave the entire lobby at the school a facelift. The maintenance team also spent a lot of time keeping the lawns at our schools at bay from the rainy summer. We shine the spotlight on our custodial and maintenance teams, who worked diligently behind the scenes to create an optimal learning environment for our students and staff. Their hard work and attention to detail make them vital to our school community.

Sanford Middle School students in Ms Joy’s and Ms Wyman’s classes were using a yard of string, a yard of tape, 20 dry spaghetti pieces, and one jumbo marshmallow to build the tallest tower in 18 minutes. They had to work together & use strategy to create the tallest tower that could stand alone
