
Sanford Middle School's JMG classroom welcomed an exciting visitor last week. Billie Nelson Clark, the JMG/Bath Iron Works employment liaison, spent time with our students sharing valuable insights about careers in the trades.
During the presentation, students learned about:
Essential skills that employers like Bath Iron Works look for in potential employees
What a day-to-day career at BIW actually looks like
Hands-on experience with professional tools, including a practical exercise using tape measures (the same assessment used in BIW's actual hiring process!)

📺 WMTW Meteorologist Ted McInerney brought the weather studio to our 5th graders at Sanford Middle School on Wednesday morning for his popular "Weather at Your School" segment! SMS students had an amazing opportunity to learn about meteorology firsthand.

Sanford Middle School’s 8th Grade Band earned a superior rating at the Maine Band Directors Association Concert Festival in South Portland earlier this week. This is the HIGHEST rating possible!
These talented musicians performed three perfectly prepared pieces and impressed the judges with their outstanding sight-reading abilities - learning and playing a brand new piece after just a few minutes of preparation.
Congratulations to all our band students on this achievement!



Yesterday, DEA Agent Brian O'Keefe visited to provide our middle and high school staff with crucial information about current substance use trends affecting New England communities.
The presentation covered important insights that help our educators better understand the challenges our students may face and how to recognize warning signs.

Sanford Middle School JMG students had an incredible day exploring aviation careers at UMA Brunswick campus on March 14th! They got hands-on experience with flight simulators, toured actual aircraft, and learned about drone technology.
From sitting in the cockpit to examining aircraft engines, our students experienced what it takes to pursue careers in aviation. The day included comprehensive tours of both the Brunswick and Saco UMA campuses, where they learned about degree programs that could launch their futures in this exciting field!

Young Journalists Make Their Mark at Sanford Middle School! 📰
Exciting things are happening at SMS with the launch of "The SMS Times" student newspaper!
Started in February under the guidance of Chambree Kumka, these journalists are already making an impact - from getting broken water fountains fixed to covering school sports and events.
Fifth-graders like Henry, Ivy, Tanner, Luke and others are learning valuable skills in writing, interviewing, and meeting deadlines while reporting on issues that matter to them.
The first edition featured sports coverage, club spotlights, school events, and even investigative reporting! Ms. Kumka hopes to expand the team to include more students from all grade levels in future editions.

A few Sanford Middle School students have been making Tuesday evenings magical at the mountain through our new ski and snowboard club.
From beginners mastering the chairlift to experienced skiers finding their favorite runs, students of ALL skill levels are having a blast!

Last night, our Sanford Performing Arts Center was filled with beautiful music as students from grades 4-12 came together for our annual Spring Sing concert!
From the energetic opening by the Spartan Show Choir performing "I'm Still Standing" to the powerful finale of "Oye" by our high school vocalists, the evening showcased the incredible talent and hard work of our young musicians.
A special shoutout to all the parents, family members, and community supporters who filled the auditorium and cheered on our performers!

Sanford Middle School spring sports registration is now open for the following sports: 7th and 8th Grade Softball and Baseball, 7th and 8th grade Boys' and Girls' lacrosse, and 6th-8th grade Boys' and Girls' Track and Field. Tryouts/Practices will begin Monday, April 14th.

Sanford High School will be holding an informational evening for parents and guardians of the Class of 2029 on Thursday, March 6, 2025. The event will focus on course selection options for incoming freshmen.
The session will take place from 6:00-7:00 PM at the Sanford Performing Arts Center. Following the discussion, tours of the high school facilities will be available from 7:00-7:30 PM for students and their families.
This event provides an opportunity for parents and guardians to learn about academic pathways and course offerings before their children begin high school in the fall.

Transportation systems engineer Mark Love from Engineers Teaching Algebra visited our Algebra and Geometry classes on February 10th, challenging students to design safe traffic intersections—a problem they tackled with enthusiasm!

Sanford Middle School JMG students had an incredible hands-on learning experience yesterday at the Sanford Police Department!
Students got an inside look at law enforcement careers during their visit, where they engaged with local officers and learned about the important role police play in our community. They had the opportunity to explore specialized equipment and hear firsthand about what it takes to serve in law enforcement.
A special thank you to the Sanford Police Department officers who took time to share their knowledge and experiences with our students.
