A Medieval Numeral System
Submitted by Mr. Benham
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6… these Arabic numerals look familiar of course. You may even recognize
these Roman numerals I, II, III, IV, V, VI. I’m guessing you haven’t heard of Cistercian
numerals though. I certainly hadn’t! Fourth grade students around the district have been
learning about the medieval period, or Middle Ages. Cistercian numerals were first
introduced to the world by monks in the early 13th century. After figuring out how the
place value was organized, and determining how to represent each digit, students got to
work solving a variety of problems written in Cistercian numerals. Some students even
memorized them! One limit we discovered was that this system can only represent
numbers up to 9,999. Can you figure out why? How might you change this system to
solve that problem?

Third graders in Mrs. Boivin's class at Sanford Pride are making math facts fun through engaging games! These interactive activities, which connect directly to our Reveal Math curriculum, help students build quick and confident recall of basic math facts - like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Just like learning to read fluently helps children understand stories better, becoming fluent with math facts allows students to easily tackle more complex math problems.
By practicing these fundamental skills through games that align with our math program, students develop the strong mathematical foundation they'll need for success in higher-level math.

News from SPE Specials
November 2024
In health, students are learning that there are MANY dimensions to health. We have been stepping out into nature, instead of sitting idle in front of a screen. We took time to notice how good it feels to spend time outdoors and to play with friends. Some classes have gone on trail walks. Other classes had fun getting creative with natural materials collected outside the school. The message is to make healthy choices with your time and to do more of what makes you truly happy!
In P.E, students are wrapping up the soccer unit. Next we’ll be working on parachute. As the cold weather and snow boot season approaches, please remember to send your children to school with comfortable sneakers for P.E. class.
In art, we have been experimenting with printmaking! We have been talking about texture, and students have created their first print using crayons, tinfoil and markers. We are now beginning to make relief prints using styrofoam!
In music, students in grades PK-4 have had opportunities to sing, move creatively, and play musical instruments. Additionally, third and fourth graders are reading written music! Chorus will visit Pinnacle nursing home on Friday, November 8th to sing for veterans. Please remember to mark your calendars for this year’s spring concert and art show event! Kindergarten and Grade 1 are on April 14th, Grade 2 and 3 are on April 15th, and Grade 4 is on April 17th.
It has been a busy start to the school year in the library. In addition to all of the new books in our collection, we have also gotten some new items for the Makerspace, including several new puzzles, games, and STEM manipulatives. Students love coming to the library to explore and engage with the Makerspace materials and find just the right book.
In Kindergarten, we've been focusing on teaching students how to care for books properly. They have been learning the importance of handling books gently, turning pages carefully, and keeping them in a safe place when not in use. They're eager to explore the wonderful world of literature, and we want to ensure they develop the proper habits to preserve these valuable resources. Kindergarteners just started taking home their first "Book Babies" to enjoy on their own or with their families.
First through fourth-grade classes have begun listening to this year's nominees for the Chickadee Award, the student choice book award sponsored by the Maine Association of School Libraries. So far, they have enjoyed hearing a modern take on The Three Little Pigs called The Three Little Guinea Pigs and a new trickster tale called Down the Hole. Students also learned about how Earth Day was started while listening to the story Black Beach. When all ten nominees have been shared, students will get to vote on their favorites at the end of March.
Students in each grade are also learning digital citizenship skills to help them be safe, respectful, and responsible when using technology online. It is great to see how much students remember from these lessons in previous years. Ask your children what they have been doing in the library because books are not the only thing!
Each week there is a new Estimation Station in the library, where students can make educated guesses about the number of items in a jar. For Halloween, they guessed the number of spooky eyeballs. For the library's weekly "This or That," the kids chose Dracula over Frankenstein. Third and fourth graders can look forward to a book display featuring books beloved by staff members when they were in third and fourth grade, and fourth graders are being invited to take part in the Maine Student Book Award.

Dear Parents/Families:
I am writing to let you know we did a rally point practice drill with our students today.
The purpose of a rally point practice is for students to know where to go in case of an emergency. The students did a great job during the practice.
Thank you.
Susan Inman, Principal

In Pre-K, we've had a busy and great start to the year!
Here are a couple pictures - exploring pumpkins and apple picking at our trip to McDougal's Orchard.

Three years into its journey, the Walking School Bus Program at Sanford Pride Elementary continues to make strides in building a stronger community and improving attendance.
What began as a creative and family-friendly way to ensure students arrive at school safely and on time has blossomed into an engaging morning routine for students, volunteers, and families.
Carol Lantagne, the program's coordinator, is there at 7:30 a.m. every morning, always with at least one volunteer. The volunteers meet in the CVS parking lot on Main Street, about a half mile from Sanford Pride Elementary. Read more about it here! https://www.sanford.org/article/1828211

Get ready for a night of fun, music, and friendly competition at the Sanford Backpack Program's "Lip Sync Showdown!" The event will take place on Saturday, October 19, at 7:00 p.m. at Sanford Performing Arts Center.
This event is presented by the Sanford Backpack Program, with all proceeds directly supporting the program’s mission to provide food for local students in need.
Some of the area’s most recognizable faces will hit the stage to battle it out for lip-sync supremacy, as voted by the audience in attendance.
