The Building Trades Program at Sanford Regional Technical Center recently received a donation from Deering Lumber. Deering Lumber holds an annual golf tournament and has donated some of the proceeds to the program. Instructor Troy Hathaway says the funds can be used to do more individualized projects with students. He plans to have students build mock-up buildings to learn how to frame floors, walls, roofs, ceilings, and interior partitions. They will also learn how to install doors, windows, exterior and interior trim, drywall, and many other aspects of residential construction. Thank you, Deering Lumber for the generous donation!

The Sanford School Department has been selected as one of three districts in Maine to receive the First 10 Grant. This initiative, spearheaded by the Maine Department of Education (MDOE), is designed to engage parents, families, and the community in promoting school readiness. First 10 Schools and Communities are partnerships of school districts, elementary schools, early childhood programs, and community partners that collaborate to work on improving teaching, learning and care for young children. The schools attend to whole child and whole student development by providing consistent quality of services to all children, aligning resources and supports across the first 10 years of children’s lives. Sanford’s Title 1 teams invited parents to attend their Fall Meet and Greets. Over 40 parents made time in their busy mornings to meet their child’s Title teachers, gain insights into the program’s objectives, understand how our teachers support student progress, and receive engaging family activities to aid their child’s literacy and math development at home. Our Title 1 program collaborates with classroom teachers to provide support to students through small-group sessions, ensuring their growth and success. The Meet and Greet was one of three parent-oriented occasions offered by the Title 1 teams throughout the school year. Parents will have the opportunity to participate in a lesson alongside their child and attend a family night filled with activities and games.
