Sanford Schools grade 4 students have been learning how to turn their strengths and interests into careers. Last month, The Finance Authority of Maine visited all grade 4 classrooms and completed an activity in which students identified what they liked to do, what they were good at, and what potential careers in the future they could do. Building upon that activity, all grade 4 students visited either the Southern Maine Aviation or Moody's Collision and learned about careers matching their interests. Students learned what careers required a high school diploma, internship, on-the-job training, or a college degree. Many thanks to FAME, Southern Maine Aviation, Moody's Collision, Sanford Elementary School Counselors, and administrators for making this possible.

The Sanford School Department caught up with Margaret Chase Smith 4th Grade teacher Lauren Brown. Lauren is in her first year at Margaret Chase Smith School. Lauren has quite literally see her students grow over the course of the year. “I actually measure them at the beginning of the year, and they’ve grown like three or four inches,” she said. “But also academically, they’ve grown so much and we’re all one big happy family in my classroom.” But more important, her students have been actively engaged and ready to learn once they arrive at class. “And the kids, they come in and they are just so excited to come in and learn, and I’m so excited to see them.” In just her first year at the school, Lauren has been impressed with how close the Sanford community is. “I think the family aspect is great,” she said. “The parents are really great and my coworkers are like family to me, too, so I think the closeknit community of it all is great." Thank you Lauren Brown!

Mrs. Deschambault's first grade authors at Margaret Chase Smith were able to return to their kindergarten teacher to read their reviews as part of their opinion writing celebration. The students were able to showcase their writing skills and model for some kindergarten students how to start with a hook, use transition words and use examples with each reason. They have more more writing unit as they finish the year!

Third grade students at Margaret Chase Smith have been working on their opinion/persuasive writing pieces. These coyotes have learned how to state their opinion, defend their opinion with examples and/or facts, and provide a closure to their writing. Coyotes were then able to share their writing pieces with families, other students, and even some teachers. The students did a great job sharing their writing and they also gave some feedback!

Mrs. Cote's kindergarten class at Margaret Chase Smith has been working hard on their construction unit. Students have learned how to measure, plan, and build using a variety of materials. They have also learned about artists and mediums, and students had opportunities to replicate some of the different techniques used by artists. To celebrate the work of the students, families were able to come in and have students share what they have been able to make throughout the unit.

MCS was able to host a talent show for coyotes to showcase some of their talents before spring break. Talents ranged from dancing, singing, beat boxing, magic tricks, martial arts, cheering, to playing the piano! It was incredible to see the talent that we have, and it was inspiring to see these courageous coyotes get up on stage to share it with an audience.
