Dear Parents/Families -
I am writing to share that we had a lockdown drill today. One of the purposes for the lockdown was for students to practice what to do if they were in a different space than their classrooms such as the cafeteria or outside on the playground.
This is the second time we have had a drill with this purpose.
All students did an excellent job during this practice.
Sincerely,
Susan Inman, Principal

SPE Specialist News:
Lots of fun things have been happening in Health! All grade levels have recently learned about bullying, the types of bullying as well as how to be an upstander rather than a bystander. The students also learned about Pink Shirt Day, which started in Nova Scotia (where Ms. Smye is from) and participated in the day! It was a great turnout and a lot of people wore pink to stand up against bullying. Students from kindergarten to grade 2 will be learning all about emotions, and students from 3rd grade to 4th are beginning to explore the digestive system!
In P.E., we will start going outside for class soon. Please remember to send in proper footwear and attire with your students so they are prepared to go out.
Great learning is happening in the Art Room! Please see the included newsletter to discover the amazing projects students have been working on. This newsletter also includes “Save The Date” reminders for our Celebration of Learning nights, which include the Art Show and grade-level concerts.
In Music, students are hard at work preparing for their Spring Concerts! K and 1st Grades will have their concerts on April 8th, 2nd and 3rd Grades will have their concerts on April 9th, and 4th Grade will have their concert on April 11th. In the next couple of weeks, there will be a letter coming home with concert-specific details.
Pre-K is off to a great start in their musical learning journey! We have been exploring musical expression, finding our singing voices, and keeping a steady beat. Ask your student to perform “Popcorn Kernels” or “Little Bunny Foo Foo” for you at home!
This week, students in 4th Grade Chorus took a daytime field trip to the Sanford Performing Arts Center. SPE’s chorus combined with MCS and CJL to create a 100-student Elementary Chorus! In addition, students got to sing with and watch performances from the middle and high schools. Our hard work came together for the “Spring Sing” concert that evening. We sang “Every Season” and “Count On Me” with students from other schools. Great job to all of the performers!
It has been a busy couple of months in the library. After our holiday break, we started reading books that have been nominated for this year's Chickadee Award. Last year, Chez Bob by Bob Shea was the winner. Students have enjoyed eight of the ten titles so far and in two weeks, they will be able to vote on their favorite.
Students in our preschool through 2nd-grade classes also went home with three brand new books to keep for their home libraries. These books were purchased with a grant from RIF (Reading Is Fundamental). Students were excited to explore their new books which included short chapter books, picture books, graphic novels, and nonfiction books. We have been fortunate to have had this donation for the past three years.
Once the Chickadee books are finished, students will continue participating in read-alouds meant to introduce and remind them about the different genres in the library. The Indi robots will also make an appearance to teach students about Coding and allow them to engage in problem-solving activities.

Students in Mrs. Mercier & Ms. Flannery's class celebrated the 100th day of school through counting collections to count to 100 by tens and ones. Students organized their counting collections using ten frames to keep track of their counting.

Sanford Pride students took center stage at the Living Wax Museum today in the cafeteria, showcasing their dedication and hard work in exploring the lives of famous world changers!
Armed with research on their favorite influential figures, students created informative reports. Each student crafted captivating backdrops that brought these historical figures to life.
Dressed as their chosen icons, students delivered short speeches, offering unique insights into the lives of world changers like Martin Luther King, Jr., Albert Einstein, Rosa Parks, Thomas Edison, and many more!
Friends and families were invited to walk around and interact with the students!
