What an incredible experience for our students last week! The talented Portland Symphony String Quartet musicians visited Carl J. Lamb, Sanford Pride, and Margaret Chase Smith schools on Thursday, May 9th. The quartet brought the beloved story of "Swimmy" to life through music and interactive performances. Students listened as the violin, viola, cello, and bass created the sounds of the deep blue sea. They even got to join Swimmy's journey by moving their hands to the music!

The students in grade 2 have been busy creating poetry. They’ve experimented with Free Verse Poetry as well as other genres such as Cinquain and Acrostic. In addition to poetry, students are learning how to write opinion pieces. In Reading, second graders are working in series book clubs and small groups learning about character traits as it relates to motivation. The grade 2 team will begin benchmark testing all students in reading over the next few weeks. In Math, the units of study have focused on measurement, time, money and 3 digit addition strategies. In addition, grade 2 students have been learning co-regulation strategies through music, rhythm and connector activities. We are all looking forward to our two end of the year events… Spark’s Ark’s Wildlife Presentation on May 15th at SPE and our bowling trip on June 7th to Bowl a Rama. Permission slips and details will be sent home soon.
