A Medieval Numeral System Submitted by Mr. Benham 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6… these Arabic numerals look familiar of course. You may even recognize these Roman numerals I, II, III, IV, V, VI. I’m guessing you haven’t heard of Cistercian numerals though. I certainly hadn’t! Fourth grade students around the district have been learning about the medieval period, or Middle Ages. Cistercian numerals were first introduced to the world by monks in the early 13th century. After figuring out how the place value was organized, and determining how to represent each digit, students got to work solving a variety of problems written in Cistercian numerals. Some students even memorized them! One limit we discovered was that this system can only represent numbers up to 9,999. Can you figure out why? How might you change this system to solve that problem?

A Note of Gratitude
Third graders in Mrs. Boivin's class at Sanford Pride are making math facts fun through engaging games! These interactive activities, which connect directly to our Reveal Math curriculum, help students build quick and confident recall of basic math facts - like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Just like learning to read fluently helps children understand stories better, becoming fluent with math facts allows students to easily tackle more complex math problems. By practicing these fundamental skills through games that align with our math program, students develop the strong mathematical foundation they'll need for success in higher-level math.
