Ms. Gagnon, Margaret Chase Smith's SEL teacher, visited various first grade classrooms this week reminding students the importance of cooperation. Students had the ability to work in teams to build various towers using spaghetti and marshmallows. Each team had to draft an idea first before working together to add the components.

The fourth grade students at Margaret Chase Smith were able to showcase their poetry skills last Wednesday. Each student authored their own anthology on a topic of their choice. Students were creative as they included various types of poetry like concrete, cinquain, acrostic, haiku and free verse. Staff and students from other classrooms were able to leave some feedback during the Poetry Walk.

In the art room at Margaret Chase Smith, we continue to have a blast creating art! Recently second grade students were challenged to use their creative brains and problem-solving skills to make mini assemblages using found objects. Second grade students observed and discussed examples of assemblage art before they began their own mini assemblages. We look forward to seeing you all for the MCS Art Show the last week in May.

Margaret Chase Smith’s coyote pups worked hard last month with the theme of honesty. Last Friday, they presented their new theme for the month of April: Cooperation! Coyotes learned what it means to cooperate, and they even had some visitors from the Sanford Fire Department come to discuss how they use cooperation every day in their line of work.

Check out Mrs. Morrison's first grade class at Margaret Chase Smith. They have been working hard on writing words with multiple syllables, and they have been learning that every syllable must include a vowel. When your child is writing at home and gets stuck when writing a word, encourage them to break the word apart by syllable to help students spell words correctly!
