I had the best recess duty the other day, racing our students and managing not to hurt myself in so doing. One of them exclaimed, “Yeah, I’m faster than an adult!” And then I witnessed the sweetest thing happen. One of our speediest students (who might’ve had a few challenges of his own last year) allowed one of his best buddies win him in a race. This friend happens to have autism and usually plays next to the others, but not necessarily with them. It was a non issue for the kids who kept on playing and racing one another, laughing and having a great time as this act of kindness seemingly went unnoticed...but I noticed. I am still so touched that I had to share with you what a wonderful school community we have at CJL. The kids also left these nice drawings without seeking any attention or credit. I still don’t know who wrote these, but I think the author is an incredible human whom we can all learn something from. “Stand here for a buddy. Stand here for a friend. Be nice. Be kind.” CJL students are wonderful and it’s because of the loving families they come from and our caring staff working together to take care of students’ social and emotional needs. Here’s proof that all your efforts are making a difference!
