Bus Safety Reminders as School Starts
As the school year begins, the Sanford School Department wants to share some important reminders with families about school bus safety.
School buses are the safest way for students to travel to and from school. Still, students play a key role in keeping themselves and their classmates safe. We encourage all families to talk with their children about staying alert and aware while getting on, riding, and getting off the bus.
The National Safety Council recommends the following guidelines.
Getting on the Bus
Stay away from traffic and avoid careless behavior.
Do not wander into the street, alleys, or private property.
Line up away from the street as the bus approaches.
Wait until the bus has fully stopped and the doors open before approaching.
Use the handrail when boarding.
Behavior on the Bus
If seat belts are available, buckle up and stay seated.
Speak softly. Loud talking or noise can distract the driver.
Keep head, arms, and hands inside the bus at all times.
Gather belongings before your stop, and keep the aisle clear of books and bags.
Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before standing up.
Getting off the Bus
Use the handrail when exiting, and always stay clear of the rear of the bus.
If you must cross in front of the bus, walk at least 10 feet ahead until you can see the driver.
Wait for the driver's signal before crossing.
If your view is blocked, move to a spot where you can see other drivers and they can see you.
Do not cross the center line until the driver signals it is safe.
