Sanford Middle School hosted its annual Jobs for Maine's Graduates Closing Ceremony recently, bringing together students, families, and community members to celebrate another successful year of personal growth, leadership development, and career readiness.
The program opened with a welcome from students Colt Daigle-Clarke and Shane Andrews, followed by opening remarks from Hannalise Medico, Trevor Lannigan, Isybella Laurion, and Navina Allen. Samantha Trufant then introduced guest speaker Mr. Moore, a seventh and eighth grade math teacher at SMS, who was praised by students for his humor, encouragement, and genuine investment in getting to know each of them.
Moore spoke about the effort it takes to build trust with students and why it is worth it. "These are some of the most amazing kids you'll work with or get to know," he told the audience. His parting message to the graduating eighth graders was simple but heartfelt: be kind, and be willing to let people in.
Students nominated Mrs. Thomas, Mr. Christie, Mrs. Minchin, and Mr. Cantara for the 2025-2026 JMG Student Advocate Awards, recognizing them for their support, encouragement, and words of advice throughout the year.
Student voices then took center stage, with Cadence Anagnost, Billy Chaplain, Bella Carton, Katie Waters, Aleira-Faith Thompson, and Kaylee Dube each sharing what JMG has meant to them. "JMG has been one of the best classes I've been in all year, if not the best class I've ever been in," said Cadence Anagnost.
Throughout the year, JMG students had the opportunity to earn state-recognized skill patch credentials in areas such as adaptability, communication, and leadership. These patches, which students can list on job applications, carry forward into high school JMG and eventually build into micro-credentials recognized by top employers across Maine as proof that students can consistently demonstrate critical life skills.
Mrs. Houle closed the evening with recognitions and a reflection on the year, taking a moment to thank families for their tireless support. "Most of what we do wouldn't have been possible without all of you guys, all the families that supported me... You did just as much as I did," she told the audience.
JMG is a nonprofit organization that partners with public education and private businesses to help all Maine students graduate, attain post-secondary credentials, and pursue meaningful careers.
