Sanford Middle School's 8th grade JMG students recently set off on their annual Adventure Trip, a two-day experience designed to bring leadership training, career exploration, and real-world skill-building to life outside the classroom.
The adventure took students as far as Bangor, with their first stop at Bath Iron Works, where they got an inside look at the careers available at one of Maine's most iconic employers. They then stepped into the Virtual Reality Lab to try their hand at welding, painting ships, crane operation, and more. From there, the group headed to the Cole Transportation Museum, where a fascinating tour traced the history of transportation across Maine. Students also had the unique opportunity to sit down in small-group interviews with Maine Veterans, hearing firsthand about their stories, service, and careers.
The trip continued at the Challenger Learning Center, where the experience reached new heights. Prior to leaving, students had submitted job applications for NASA careers, and upon arrival they were unofficially "hired" and assigned roles in a mission simulation that challenged them to collaborate, problem-solve, think critically, and stay patient under pressure.
The second day brought SMS students to UNUM in Portland, where they joined 8th grade JMG students from across the entire state, including students who traveled all the way from Fort Kent. Together, they explored downtown Portland through career stop tours and put their skills to the test in mock interview evaluations, networking workshops, and team-building challenges.
Among the highlights of the trip were three very special award recognitions. These honors are not given out lightly, as only a select few students are chosen, making them a true testament to the character and effort of those who receive them. Congratulations to Katie Waters, who received the JMG Leadership Award, and to Colt Daigle-Clarke and Billy Chaplain, who each received the Greatness of Spirit Award.
