Dear Sanford Families:
We are writing to share exciting news about an important change coming to early childhood special education services in Sanford. Effective July 1, 2026, the Sanford School Department will assume responsibility for special education services for children ages 3-5 who have an Individualized Education Program (IEP). An IEP is a written plan that outlines specialized instruction and services for children with disabilities. This change allows us to serve children and families directly, building strong relationships from the very beginning of each child’s educational journey.
What is changing?
In 2024, the Maine Department of Education began working with public school districts to transition special education services for 3-5 year olds from Child Development Services to local public schools. This will be required by law for all Maine schools by 2028.
What does this mean for families?
For families whose children currently receive services through Child Development Services, those services will continue without interruption. The Sanford School Department will manage your child’s program and provide all outlined services. We are committed to making this transition as smooth as possible.
Starting July 1, 2026:
• All paperwork and educational planning will come from the Sanford School Department
• Planning meetings will be hosted by the Sanford School Department
• A Sanford School Department staff member will serve as your child’s case manager
• All current services will remain the same unless changes are agreed upon with families
More information coming this spring
Until July 1st, families currently receiving services will continue working with their current case manager and providers. The Sanford School Department is working closely with Child Development Services and the Maine Department of Education to ensure a smooth transition. We will share additional details this spring, including information about transition meetings, program options, and next steps.
We look forward to supporting all of our young learners and their families!
Sincerely,
Matt Nelson
Superintendent
