the School Committee welcomed a new student representative

The Sanford School Committee has welcomed a new student representative, SHS junior Alessandra Castro, who brings a strong academic record and deep commitment to community service to her new role.

Castro joins seniors Matthew Melvin and Zachary Moores on the student representative committee. As a founder of one of the school's newest service clubs and a dedicated member of multiple extracurricular activities, Castro brings both leadership experience and a strong connection to student life.

For Castro, the motivation to become a student representative stems from curiosity and a desire to grow as a leader. "I was interested in seeing the inner workings of the school committee and how they use teamwork to make decisions. I also wanted to gain more leadership experience and meet new people,” she said.

As founder and president of the SHS Interact Club, which partners with the Sanford-Springvale Rotary Club, she has demonstrated her ability to lead community service initiatives and build meaningful partnerships with local organizations. Her involvement also extends to Peer Helpers Club, National Honor Society, the SHS Marching Band, and tennis.

Academically, Castro excels in mathematics and is currently enrolled in AP Calculus. "I have taken advanced math courses for my entire school career, and I am excited to finally apply everything I have learned in one class. Another reason why I love this class and subject is that there are other motivated students there who want to learn more, making the environment challenging and electric."

Castro has clear goals for her time on the committee. "I am excited to advocate for student needs and help improve the school environment," she said. "I want to help improve facility cleanliness and encourage others in the community to help maintain a sanitary space for students to learn here at Sanford High School."

Outside of school, Castro dedicates her time to playing piano, an instrument she has practiced for six years, and volunteering with cats at the Animal Welfare Society in Kennebunk. Both pursuits require patience, dedication, and attention to detail—qualities that serve her well in all her endeavors.

Drawing from her experiences as a motivated student and leader, Castro offered advice for her peers: "Study hard. Take your classes seriously. The education and opportunities that Sanford High School offers students are amazing. Find something that you love doing and keep going; stay motivated."
