Sanford High School seniors filled the Performing Arts Center Wednesday, September 17, as school counselors presented essential information about post-secondary planning. The session allowed students to ask questions throughout the presentation.
The counseling team announced the launch of their new "Senior Sessions" program, beginning Friday, September 26th with a session titled "What You Need to Know to Apply to a 4-year College." These weekly Friday sessions will focus on specific aspects of the college application process, with plans to bring in English teachers to help students craft compelling application essays.
During the presentation, counselors emphasized the importance of students knowing their application deadlines, particularly for those applying to four-year colleges. Early action deadlines typically fall between November 1st and December 15th, and students are encouraged to create their Common Application accounts if they haven't already done so.
When students asked about SAT requirements, counselors explained that many colleges have adopted test-optional policies since the pandemic. They directed students to fairtest.org to research specific schools' testing requirements and advised meeting with counselors to determine whether submitting scores would be beneficial.
Recognizing that not all seniors plan to attend college immediately, the counseling team assured students that targeted support for those entering the workforce directly would come later in the year. Students uncertain about their post-graduation plans were encouraged to schedule brief meetings with counselors or connect with Mrs. McDougall for additional guidance.
Throughout the presentation, counselors acknowledged the anxiety many students feel about the post-graduation planning process.
They encouraged open communication and reminded students that meeting timelines should align with application deadlines rather than rushing into appointments unnecessarily. The presentation concluded with counselors reiterating their commitment to supporting every senior, regardless of their chosen path after graduation.
