The Sanford-Springvale YMCA recently celebrated a milestone with its very first Pre-K graduation ceremony on Tuesday June 10th, marking the successful completion of the inaugural year of its partnership with the Sanford School Department.
Sixteen young graduates gathered with their families to commemorate their educational journey and prepare for the next chapter—kindergarten.
"Our first year as a pilot site for the Public Pre-K program was outstanding," said Cassandra Lunderville, Early Learning Center Coordinator for the Sanford-Springvale YMCA. "Thriving with the support of the Sanford School Department and under the guidance of Elizabeth Reynolds and Cayla Bleakney, we were able to foster school readiness through developing the foundational skills for continued school success for 16 students. Watching their growth and development over the 2024-2025 school year was inspiring."
The results speak for themselves. Throughout the year, teachers witnessed tremendous growth in their students—from learning to share and show kindness to mastering letters, numbers, and the magic of storytelling. Most importantly, the children discovered the joy of learning itself.
The program is part of the Mills Administration's statewide effort to expand childcare options, with the Sanford School Department receiving a Pre-K Expansion grant to make this vision a reality. The YMCA's newly constructed classrooms not only house the 16 Pre-K students but also accommodate 30 additional children in its expanded child care program.
During the graduation ceremony, special recognition went to the families whose support made the program's success possible. The ceremony also highlighted the dedication of the teaching staff, with special thanks given to Miss Kayla for her extra support and care throughout the year.
