Students at Sanford Regional Technical Center gained valuable hands-on experience during a collaborative emergency services training exercise held on Wednesday, May 14.
The educational activity began with a simulated emergency call over SRTC's radio frequency, bringing together students from the Law Enforcement, Emergency Medical Technician, and Firefighting programs. The scenario involved responding to a traffic incident in the Fire Training area, giving students an opportunity to practice their skills in a controlled learning environment.
Under the guidance of professional mentors, student leaders coordinated their teams' efforts, applying classroom knowledge to a realistic training scenario. Health Occupations program students also participated by setting up a treatment area, while Video Production students documented the exercise and provided support.
The training exercise provided students with hands-on, real-world experience that simply cannot be replicated in a traditional classroom setting. By practicing their skills in this dynamic, collaborative environment, students gained invaluable insights into the importance of teamwork and communication across different emergency service disciplines. These immersive learning opportunities not only enhance technical skills but also build confidence and decision-making abilities that will serve students throughout their future careers as they work to support and protect our communities.
The collaborative training was made possible through partnerships with local emergency services, including Sanford Police Department, Sanford Fire Department, LifeFlight of Maine, Scarborough Police Department, Acton Fire Department, Alfred Fire Department, and Maine Health.
