The Sanford Performing Arts Center filled with families and friends on Wednesday, March 5th, as students from across the district showcased their talents at the annual Spring Sing concert. The performance brought together vocalists from grades 4-12, offering a heartwarming display of musical growth and achievement.
"Spartan Show Choir and their band, The Rocket Men, started our show with a performance of 'I'm Still Standing' by Elton John," explained Hattie Skvorak, director of the Carl J Lamb Chorus and Spartan Show Choir. "The auditioned group's performance featured soloist Olan Clock, and included student choreography. The Rocket Men supported the students, consisting of Sanford faculty and parents."
The program flowed seamlessly between grade levels, with the eighth-grade chorus performing Paul Simon's "Sound of Silence" under Kyle Hayes' direction, followed by the fifth-grade chorus delighting the audience with their performance of "I'm a Believer."
The high school ensembles demonstrated remarkable skill, with the Sanford High Chamber Singers performing Jennifer Lucy Cook's "Over and Over" and the Select Treble Choir presenting Andrea Ramsey's "Lineage" with percussion accompaniment.
"The Sanford High School choral ensembles performed beautifully!" said Ryan Geary, director of the high school choral groups. "More importantly, they were kind, caring, and professional. They assisted the singers from MCS, CJL, SPE, and SMS all day with bathroom trips and kind words. Very proud of what we can accomplish musically and personally for all students."
The concert coincided with the 40th annual Music In Our Schools Month, a nationwide initiative highlighting the importance of quality music education programs. Parents in attendance witnessed firsthand how music education nurtures confidence, teamwork, and creative expression among students of all ages.
"It was truly a fantastic, collaborative performance," said Heather Hastings, director of the Margaret Chase Smith Chorus. "During the daytime rehearsal on Wednesday, elementary students also got to participate in a large group vocal and physical warmup, and they were able to watch and enjoy the other student groups as they rehearsed their pieces. Many of the MCS chorus students later shared that it was a very fun and exciting day. For some, it was their very first time on the big stage."
