Dear Sanford School Department Parents and Guardians,
Happy November! As winter approaches, I want to remind everyone of our weather-related protocols. When there is inclement weather, we work closely with local authorities, public works, transportation services, meteorologists, and nearby school districts to make informed decisions about school delays, early dismissals, or cancellations. Ensuring our students and staff’s safety is our top priority.
Our last day of school is currently scheduled for Tuesday, June 10th if we use no snow days; for every day that school is cancelled due to weather, we will add a make-up day starting with June 11th. If we have to use storm days beyond June 18th, we will plan to utilize remote school days.
Reminders:
1. If school is delayed, cancelled or dismissed early due to weather or other reasons, we'll send a message through our website and app. Please make sure your contact info in Infinite Campus is current so you stay informed. Check with your school's office if you have any questions about the info we have on file. You can also request updates through the Infinite Campus parent portal, which we'll process within 24 hours. If you need help, contact Anne L'Heureux at 608-8703 or alheureux@sanford.org.
2. Delays, cancellations and early release information will be posted as early as possible with the following media outlets: TV stations: Channels 6, 8 and 13.
3. When school is cancelled or students are released early, all school buildings will be closed for all activities, including sports and practices, unless there are extenuating circumstances. We make every effort not to dismiss school early, but the weather can be unpredictable, so there may be exceptions where early dismissal is warranted.
4. Under certain circumstances, school may be delayed by one or two hours to allow roads to improve and city crews time to take care of the roads and to allow contractors and staff time to get our buildings opened up. In these situations, all bussing and start times will be moved back one or two hours. Lunches will be served at the normal time; schools will close at the normal time. If school is delayed on a Wednesday, students will still be released early and scheduled professional development will proceed.
5. If early dismissal becomes necessary, every attempt will be made to have website messages and media notifications made by 12:00 noon.
6. You may not agree with my decision to cancel or postpone school. Parents and guardians have the decision regarding their child’s safety. If you feel it is too dangerous for your child to attend school, please keep him/her home and notify the school.
Thank you for your patience and understanding. I know changes to the school day often make it difficult for parents but I must take everyone’s safety into consideration.
Sincerely,
Matt Nelson
Superintendent of Schools
