Sanford Pride Elementary’s Student Leadership team is comprised of third and fourth grade students, with representatives from each classroom.

At the beginning of the school year, the outgoing fourth grade leaders present to their peers, outlining what it takes to be a leader.

Through this, the school can pass the responsibility to the next leaders of the school. From planning spirit weeks to assisting in Pre-K and Kindergarten classrooms, the student leaders are beneficial at Sanford Pride Elementary.

The student leadership team spearheaded a logo contest last year, resulting in the creation of the school’s lion mascot. This year, the team decided to have the whole school collaborate on naming the mascot through a contest.

“It was really important for all of us to make sure that everyone had a say in naming the mascot,” Sanford Pride Elementary Principal Susan Inman said.

The process started with each classroom generating potential names for the mascot, guided by a visual presentation of the lion logo. Teachers and students in each classroom brainstormed ideas for names.

“We wanted it to be a name that is kind and representative of our school,” Inman said. “And also a name that as many people could identify with.”

The name of the lion logo is expected to be announced right before students leave for February Vacation. Inman has incorporated a student leadership team since she’s been in Sanford.

“I believe in giving these kids those skills,” Inman said. “I think it’s important for them to learn that they have a voice, you’re taking care of your class, and your grade school level. Because that just makes our school better.”
