How did you feel when you learned about being selected as a U.S. Presidential Scholar Candidate?

I actually had no idea about the Presidential Scholar program beforehand; when I first saw the email I was so surprised that I had to look it up to make sure it wasn't fake. After verifying that it was real, I was very honored to be recognized on a national platform, as I had never experienced something like that before.

Are there teachers, mentors, or family members who have played a significant role in your academic journey that you'd like to acknowledge?

Mrs. Colbeth, my Calculus teacher, has been one of the most influential and inspirational teachers I've ever had. In my Junior year, her energy, teaching style, and humor helped me replace my nervousness and self-doubt in regards to math classes with a genuine excitement and eagerness to learn. She saw in me what I had failed to see in myself; a capable student that could excel in a math class, and have fun doing it. She made me a more well-rounded learner and gave me the confidence that empowered me to truly hit my stride as a student.

Are there specific fields of study or career paths you are particularly passionate about Pursuing?

I'm most interested in politics and urban issues, so I plan on pursuing either political science, pre-law, or urban studies in college. After graduating, I might also pursue a law degree. Ultimately, I hope to have a career as a state/local legislator, judge, or urban planner.
