Students Shine in K for ME and Pre-K for ME Showcases at Margaret Chase Smith

Students, parents, and teachers gathered for two special showcases at Margaret Chase Smith Elementary School this week.

These showcases featured the efforts of students in Ms. Wilson's, Ms. Cote's, and Ms. Devine's classrooms.

Ms. Wilson and Ms. Cote held their K for ME Unit 2 showcase on Monday.

K for ME supports kindergarten students' learning and their development in literacy and language, science and engineering, social studies, the arts, and social-emotional realms.

The program uses instructional practices aligned with Maine's learning results while building children's ability to learn through meaningful and relevant activities.

In Unit 2, students focus on caring for living things and learning about animals through investigation and research. Students specifically study fish, frogs, owls, and wolves. The students also collaborate on projects.

Throughout Unit 2, students participated in read-alouds, discovery tables, and art studio tables to learn about these animals. During the showcase, students showed their parents the art they created.

On Wednesday, Ms. Devine's Pre-K students showed their parents their progress in Unit 2 for Pre-K for ME.

Pre-K for ME helps build students' social-emotional, language, literacy, math, and vocabulary skills. Unit 2 focused on the concepts of friendship, how to be a good friend, and ways to resolve conflicts.

Students participated in read-alouds, helping them learn about the importance of being who you are, supporting friends, and enjoying social time together. Through this unit, they also learned to identify rhyming words and had multiple opportunities to develop beginning writing skills.
