Success! All week the 8th graders have been working with personnel from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as sponsors of the Sea Perch Program. This is a program that teaches students science, math, engineering, and technology all encompassed in one project. Students have been working in teams to build an underwater, remotely operated vehicle (ROV). Students have constructed their ROVs from basic materials. Students have learned to wire motors; build their remotes and solder the circuit boards; and problem solve how to make their ROV operate successfully. Many of the 8th graders ROVs were completed and given a quick trial this afternoon. Tomorrow the rest will be tested, and if an ROV is unsuccessful; then the team has to deduce why their ROV does not work and one up with solution. All valuable skills to be learned.
