September is Attendance Awareness Month, a time for individuals and organizations to learn about attendance issues and absenteeism.
The Sanford School Department recognizes that attendance is essential to academic success. Missing 10 percent, or about two days each month of the school year, can make it harder to learn to read.
Students can still fall behind if they miss just one or two days every few weeks.
If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, and other parents for advice on how to make your child feel comfortable and excited about learning.
You can also help improve your child's attendance by setting a regular bedtime and morning routine, laying out clothes and packing backpacks the night before, and scheduling medical appointments and extended trips when school isn't in session.
