As Jonathan Mapes and John Roux completed their respective terms on the Sanford School Committee in December, they both offered similar advice to the new members who will take their seats.

“Listen,” Roux said. “Sit back, listen, observe, and take it all in.”

“Listen and learn,” Mapes said. “Don’t go in thinking I’m going to fix this, this, and this.”

Mapes and Roux were sworn into the school committee in 2013. Both have been pillars in the Sanford community for many years. Mapes is the president of H.A. Mapes Inc. fuel supplier.

Roux is the Vice President and Co-Owner of Garnsey Bros Insurance located on Main Street. Mapes and Roux were also on the board of directors together for the Sanford-Springvale YMCA.

With their experience in the Sanford community, they both stressed the importance of doing what’s suitable for the student body across the district.

“What’s in the best interest of all students, all parents, all grandparents,” Mapes said. “That’s what we have to consider.”

“At the end of the day, you’re there for the kids, and it’s rewarding,” Roux said. “When I go to a football game or a basketball game and see the community, that’s rewarding.”

As both looked back on their experience with the Sanford School Committee, neither pointed to a specific moment they felt most gratifying. Roux did mention a moment when he had to make a speech after they opened Alumni Stadium at the high school back in 2018, specifically as memorable. But both Mapes and Roux felt a great sense of support, whether it was walking around town or taking in a game.

“I think bringing a sense of calm logic to the school committee and having folks thank you for that is gratifying,” Mapes said. “You go to a basketball game, you go to a luncheon, or you go to a supermarket, and they thank you. And you think you’re doing something right. After exiting, having people say they will miss you is gratifying.”
