Scholarship, service, leadership, and character were the four pillars exemplified at Sanford High School's annual NHS Induction Ceremony at the Performing Arts Center on Monday, November 27th.

More than thirty juniors and seniors were inducted into the National Honors Society, an organization that recognizes students who meet those pillars. NHS is student-led and has different events throughout the year depending on the interests and needs of the school. Juniors and seniors with a minimum grade point average of 88% are encouraged to apply and complete a form focusing on their extracurricular accomplishments, employment, volunteer services, and more.

On Monday, the event served as a testament to the students' commitment to the four pillars while highlighting each inductee's accomplishments.

Alexandra Payeur, senior and president of Sanford's National Honors Society, delivered opening remarks before the new members were inducted. Payeur urged the new members to reflect on the pillars they embody. A candle-lighting ceremony followed after the inductees received their NHS certificate.

English teacher Kelly Foley served as the guest speaker for the ceremony. Foley challenged the students to optimize their opportunities and continue to reach their ever-growing potential. She also recognized the commitment of the students.

"They give their all to their academics, activities, and community," Foley said. "They strive to achieve, lead, and serve all while developing themselves into the people they are and continue to become."

Payeur closed the ceremony by thanking advisors Sandra Thompson and Laurie Works.
