SRTC Home Building Scholarship

SRTC ConstructionTrades Graduates Receive Over $20K in Tools and Scholarships

On May 24th, twenty-seven seniors at the Sanford Regional Technical Center received a SRTC/HBRAME Home Building Project Scholarship at the SRTC Recognition Night. Over $20,000 worth of tools and monetary scholarships were awarded to graduating students from the building trades, electrical wiring and plumbing programs who were instrumental in the home building project. These awards are funded through the sale of the modular home that the students constructed in partnership with the Home Builders and Remodelers Association of Maine.  HBRAMe provides the school with a connection to businesses and national distributors of building materials who assist by providing donated building materials. Local contractors and businesses also contribute to the project through donations of materials and their time, often taking the opportunity to provide instruction and demonstrations to the students. Students get to be a part of the entire home construction process, even those aspects outside of their trade areas. This collaborative project has become a self-sustaining, real world learning experience for the students at SRTC that also benefits the students after they graduate through these awards. Nineteen of the students received power and hand tools used in their trade areas and 8 students received $1,000 scholarships for their post-secondary education.
