Amber Badger does a check on a shelter cats heart to make sure it is healthy.

When you were young, what did you say you wanted to be when you "grew up?" Imagine if in middle school you actually had the chance to try that dream career out!? Well, as a SJHS JMG student, you can!

On March 14th, 14 SJHS JMG students traveled to AWS in Kennebunk to learn about careers in the animal care field. They learned about becoming a veterinarian, the marketing director of the shelter, an animal care tech, humane educator and an obedience trainer. All students were able to see each career in action as they rotated throughout the day. Then, the last rotation was a choice. They were able to choose one of the careers they would like to have a more in depth experience in and had time to actually "work" in that career for a bit! For example, students who chose an in depth experience as a veterinarian actually completed a medical exam on a shelter cat that included lung, heart, eye and ear checks. Students who chose to learn more about becoming a marketing director were able to create ads for animals who had been at the shelter longer to help them get adopted and these ads will be featured starting today on the AWS site! Students who chose to learn more about being an animal care tech were able to prepare dinner and some peanut butter treats for the dogs!

The trip was so much fun and the students did a wonderful job representing JMG, Sanford and SJHS!
