Deep Study Dine and Discuss

Deep Study Dine and Discuss

Written by Tammy Hilton: SJHS Literacy Coach

Critical analysis and a deep dive into character complexity was front and center in Mrs. Cote’s LC 6 ELA class this week.  Students have spent the last several weeks reading novels with rich, and complex characters to analyze the relationship those characters have to setting and theme.  This week, it was time for the students to celebrate and showcase their learning.

Mrs. Cote put together a dine and discuss for her students.  Students worked in small groups to read picture books with a deep and complex lense to analyze the characters, setting, and themes, all while dining on snacks provided by Mrs. Cote.  Once students dined, read, and discussed the picture books, they were able to graffiti the provided table cloths with quotes, insights, and symbols that matched the books’ literary complexities for their peers to comment on, and learn from.

Students were also able to showcase their own hard work over the last several weeks through a gallery walk of their reading notebooks in which students left complimentary comments on their peers’ notebook entries and voted on “best in show” in each class.  The winners of best in show for each block are shown below.

Wonderful job, LC 6 students!  Your hard work really lit up literacy this week!!
