Each year the Elks sponsors an Americanism Essay Contest for students in grades 5-8. This year’s theme was “What Freedom of Speech Means to Me.” At the local level, 1st and 3rd place were awarded in Division I to SJHS 6th Graders, Andrew Melvin and Matthew Melvin and to Timothy McGee and Elsie Gendron for Division II. All four essays were submitted for judging at the state level. Both Andrew's and Elsie's essays were chosen for 1st Place honors, representing the State of Maine. The students were recognized at this year's Elks Youth Banquet for their accomplishments! Congratulations to these extraordinary writers!
