Kindness Takes a Seat: New Buddy Table Opens at Sanford Middle School

A new initiative at Sanford Middle School started with one student's compassion and has grown into something wonderful for our entire school community.

Fifth-grader Grace Raymond noticed something that many students have experienced at one time or another—the feeling of sitting alone and wishing for company. But Grace didn't just notice it; she decided to do something about it.

What started as her personal experience of feeling lonely in the cafeteria became the inspiration for a project that could help many students feel more included and welcomed.

Grace took her idea seriously, approaching Ms. Tracy for guidance and creating a thoughtful slideshow presentation.

She then met officially with Principal Ms. Crosby to get approval for her vision. Her dedication and initiative paid off—the Buddy Table is now a reality in Sanford Middle School’s cafeteria, located by the windows where students can easily find it.

The Buddy Table is designed to be a welcoming space for all students. Students who find themselves sitting alone and would like to make new friends can choose to sit there, as can new students who are still getting to know their classmates.

The table also welcomes students who want to practice kindness by reaching out to others who might not have as many friends. This isn't just a table for students who are struggling socially—it's a place where any student can choose to sit when they want to be part of building a more inclusive community.
