Sanford High Students Guide 8th Graders Through Transition Experience

A group of Sanford High School students recently visited Sanford Middle School to participate in a panel discussion aimed at helping 8th graders prepare for their transition to high school. The panel, consisting of five high school students—Ornello Keto, Gabe Roberge, Lily Peters, Erik Skillings, and Sadie Sevigny—shared their experiences with incoming freshmen.

"Coming into high school, I got a lot more confidence, putting myself out there, being involved. You become friends with upperclassmen, lower classmen, just a big group of people, and it helps you with getting through it," Sevigny said.

The panel provided information about academic expectations at Sanford High School, emphasizing the school's supportive environment. They highlighted "Spartan time," which allows students to book sessions with specific teachers for additional help with their studies.

When discussing social experiences, the panelists described how high school opens up opportunities to build new friendships across all grade levels. They emphasized the value of forming connections with peers who share similar goals and interests.

The students enthusiastically described the food options available at Sanford High School, including daily pizza, a hot food bar, handmade wraps, and a salad bar. They also highlighted the "Spartan Snack," a free after-school option available to all students.

Getting involved in extracurricular activities was a key recommendation from all panelists. They explained the process for joining through Tech Explorations in late May/early June and participating in summer programs. "For our captain's practices, we're mostly just to kind of get to know each other, get to know the sport and stuff like that. It's mostly just for fun," Peters explained.

Homecoming emerged as a highlight of the high school experience, described as "the best week of the year," with spirit days, sporting events, and float building, culminating in the homecoming football game and dance. The panelists mentioned that high school dances feature professional DJs and an energetic atmosphere where everyone participates.

The panel discussed Sanford High School's commitment to inclusivity through programs like unified sports teams and "Lunch Buddies," where students share lunch with peers from the special needs classroom.

Throughout the discussion, the high school students offered practical advice and enthusiastic perspectives, showcasing the positive community spirit at Sanford High School and the many opportunities available to students as they make this important transition.
