*Good morning from your SMS Civil Rights Team! February is Black History Month, an annual time to remember important people and events in the history of people of African descent around the world. This week we would like to bring attention to W.E.B Du Bois. Born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, he lived there for his entire childhood as one of the very few black families in the area. He became the first African American graduate from his local high school in 1884, then after attending several universities, went on the be the first Black man to receive a PhD from Harvard University. Of the many accomplishments of W.E.B. Du Bois, he was well known as one of the foremost Black intellectuals of his time. He was one of the founding members of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People), became their director of publicity and research, and started the organizations' official journal in 1910. W.E.B. Du Bois wrote that Black Americans should embrace their African heritage even as they worked and lived in the United States. The SMS Civil Rights Team hopes that we can all celebrate each other’s heritage and be proud of who we are and where we come from.

*Your Spartan Wrestling team will be hosting a Dodgeball Tournament on Friday March 8th after school.  Teams will compete by grade level, crowning two team champions for divisions 5th & 6th and 7th & 8th. Prizes will go to our team champions! We have many adults in the building who have mad dodgeball skills, so hurry fast to get two on your team. The cost to play will be $5 per player. You may have 6-8 players on a team. You must register your team by completing registration forms, which are located outside of the school counseling office. We are taking 6 teams from grades 5/6 and 6 from 7/8. Registration is first come first serve, so once we have 12 teams registration will close. Concessions will also be sold by our very own JMG program. Please see Mr. Coleman with any questions. See you on the court!
