Good News from our Second Grade-

Second Graders are Soaring!
Students have been taking our Second Step lessons and using them to persevere
with a growth mindset. Our new math program is rigorous. Students need to be
courageous, take chances, and be willing to fail and try again. While they may not
have mastered all the skills YET, they know that with a positive mindset, lots of
practice and help when they get stuck from their teachers, they WILL get it.
In Reading, our second graders are growing like beanstalks, rolling up their sleeves
and tackling tricky words, using explicitly taught strategies. In Writing, they are
stretching out their small moment or narrative stories over several pages adding
details and “craft moves” from our favorite authors.
Science is all about habitat and biodiversity through lessons and activities that involve
classifying animals, understanding how animals survive, and learning to identify
sounds of frogs in a pond or lake. They even are engaged in engineering by
attempting to design prototypes of bird feeders according to the type of bird they
want to attract to their yard! And finally, in Social Studies, students are learning about
different communities (rural, urban and suburban). They are exploring how a
community makes decisions, what the role of geography and natural resources has on
a community and how to read a map.
We are very proud of our Second Graders for having a positive mindset, taking
chances in their learning and working hard!
