What's new in Grade 2!

Grade 2 News - January 17, 2022

The students in second grade are excited to be back to school after our holiday break!  We began new reading, writing and phonics studies.  In reading and writing, we are studying realistic fiction and story characters. The children are developing their own fictitious characters in writing workshop with adventures and problems to solve along the way. Some classes are doing individual writing projects as well such as procedural writing of “How to Build a Snowman.” and reflectional pieces focused on Peace and Kindness as a follow up to Martin Luther King Jr. readings and our school-wide kindness unit.  We are  also studying various characters in series books and reading carefully to notice their traits and behaviors and how that develops the plot of a story. In Phonics, we are learning strategies for decoding  difficult multi-syllable words.  Everyday Math units are surrounding place value concepts and Reveal units are about addition and subtraction strategies within word problems.

Our new Mystery Science Unit is titled - Material Magic. The first lesson is about the properties of materials and how certain kinds of materials can protect us from the cold and the heat.

Our second grade team is very proud of all the children and their hard work and flexibility over these last few months of school. The children are showing lots of growth and improvements.  Keep up the good work!
