News from Second Grade

Grade 2 News  - February /March 2021

The second graders of Willard School have been hard at work learning!  In Reading Workshop, we will return to a deeper study of Non fiction.  In this unit, the children will not only improve their nonfiction reading skills but they will be working on their speaking and listening skills as well. We will read nonfiction and not only collect facts but develop an even deeper understanding of the main idea and supporting information.  In Writing Workshop, our big topic has been Poetry. The children are crafting free verse poetry and practicing with choosing heartfelt topics. Our lessons have focused on choosing precise words, repetition, beginnings and endings, line breaks and of course mechanics! Phonics study has lead us to learning about how to decode big words!

In math class, we began a study of time and measurement. This unit also includes a beginning study of place value.   We will continue working on fact fluency, throughout the unit.

Our school-wide focus during the month of February was on Courage. The children spent their morning meetings discussing this concept and exploring scenarios where courage was involved.  We read books about Courage and did group writing activities as well. Our next theme for the month of March will be on Responsibility.
