Specials News

News from P.E., Art, Library, Health, and Music:

This school year, lots of learning has been taking place in our Specials classes. In Phys. Ed., we have been working on doing socially distant activities that the students can do without others and with limited equipment. Our students have risen to the challenge and have done well adapting to this school year like no other.

In Art class, we’ve worked on projects that reflect our current need to wear masks, and all that it entails. We spoke about how to effectively communicate, both in conversation and in sharing our emotions; wearing a face mask covers half of our face and it is hard to read how people are feeling when wearing face masks! We practiced good communication skills, fundamental art skills, and focused on our classroom community with these projects.

In the Library, Grades 1-3 have been learning about telling the difference between fiction/non-fiction books, identifying the jobs of the author/illustrator, and practicing how to take care of borrowed books.  Mrs. Dompkouski recently started reading non-fiction titles on animals and showing students how to access PebbleGo as a research database. In 4th Grade, students have learned about different genres of literature, what it means to be an author and illustrator, as well as learned how to find information on PebbleGo. A small group of fourth graders have been meeting in a weekly book club and reading "Take A Stand Rosa Parks" by Peter Roop.

Health classes have been working in the safety unit. We learned the correct way to wash hands, how to be safe on the internet, and some common injuries and how to help. We are now creating Fire Escape Plans for our individual homes.

In Music, students have been busy creating masterpieces with drums, boomwhackers, triangles, maracas, and more! 1st and 2nd graders have been using their imaginations while listening to music and learning how to create music together. 3rd and 4th grades have been performing written music with rhythm patterns that include quarter notes, eighth notes, and rests. We have learned how to listen to our musical creations carefully and revise our work. Lots more is coming up in Music this school year, including a 4th Grade ukulele unit sponsored by our local community and “Stuff The Bus”. If you would like to learn more about sponsoring a ukulele and supporting this cause, email Mrs. Mannino at mmannino@sanford.org for more information.

We look forward to another trimester of learning!
