Grade 2 Happenings!
We are starting three new units in Reading, Writing and Math. Our Reading and Writing Units are both focusing on nonfiction. In Reading, we are learning about the features on nonfiction text and how reading nonfiction involves focusing on “Growing Knowledge” by paying attention careful attention to new knowledge and new vocabulary. We are also studying the features of nonfiction text and the formats of different types of nonfiction text.
In Writing, we are composing “All About” books. The children have selected topics they are “experts” in and are sharing their knowledge while utilizing nonfiction text elements. They are learning how to separate information into chapters/sections and how to include labels, captions and detailed pictures that teach their readers.
In Math our focus is developing strategies for solving addition facts. The children are building fluency and automatic recall as they develop strategies for all different groups of facts. In this unit we will also learn how to write and solve number stories how to create both name collection boxes and frames and arrows.
Finally in Phonics, the children are enjoying being Word Detectives and Phonics Professors as they learn to apply the skills of “Sneaky E”, Homophones and “Rimes” over the first lessons. The children also love their Class Mascot Gus who comes along and learns with us during all our phonics lessons!
