The Sanford School Department is starting to spotlight employees at all of our schools.

The Sanford School Department is starting to spotlight employees at all of our schools. If you know an employee who you think should be highlighted, please email communications coordinator Sam Bonsey at sbonsey@sanford.org. Our first spotlight is Margaret Chase Smith School Title 1 Teacher Ann Arnold.

What is your favorite part about working at Margaret Chase Smith?

My favorite part of MCS is being part of a family.  Since joining the staff in 1996,  I have developed so many friendships.  We've been through celebrations together as well as tragedies.  We have always been there for one another, no matter what.  We have always been a close knit group of staff from custodians, to support staff, to administrators.  We are family.

If you could share one piece of advice with students, what would it be?

My advice for students would be to always believe in themselves, no matter what anybody says.  Work hard, believe you can, and be your best!  In my classroom each day we would say this affirmation:  " I am a smart, special, valuable person. I respect myself and I respect others. My words and actions are kind and honest.  I am proud to be ME!"  I always want kids to believe!

What made you want to become an educator?

I have wanted to be a teacher since I was a little girl.  I would help my cousin prepare her classroom by sharpening pencils and putting all the supplies on her new students' desks. Sometimes she would let me help her correct papers!  I loved it!  Not so much as a real teacher.   As I got older and babysat, I really wanted to mold and influence children to become good, strong, creative members of society.  I just want kids to feel loved and to be loved no matter what and I have to be a good example, so I've tried to live my life this way.

What are your interests and hobbies?

My interests are reading, hiking, swimming, traveling, finding great antiques, and having fun with my family and friends.   One of my favorite things to do is stained glass.

What is your favorite TV show or movie?

My favorite tv shows are The Rookie and Ghosts right now.  I really loved the movie Frozen because it represented strong girls who believed in themselves.
