Margaret Chase Smith Kindergarteners take field trip to SRTC

Kindergarteners at Margaret Chase Smith School took a field trip to Sanford Regional Technical Center Thursday morning, where they got to explore some of the programs SRTC offers.

The children were split into groups, and each group had the opportunity to visit three different programs: the horticultural and landscaping program, the culinary arts program, and the firefighting program.

In the horticultural and landscaping program, the kindergarteners learned about the different types of plants and flowers grown in the greenhouse. They also got a chance to see firsthand how the plants are cared for and how they grow. Students in the program took the time to show the children some of the basics of gardening, such as how to plant a seed and how to water a plant.

In the culinary arts program, the kindergarteners saw how food is prepared and cooked in the kitchen. They learned about the different tools and equipment that are used in the kitchen. They also toured the SRTC cafe, while some of the students in the program showed them how they serve customers and the type of silverware that is put on each dining table.

In the firefighting program, the students learned about the tools and equipment firefighters use to put out fires. They also got to see how firefighters work together as a team to keep people safe. Some of the kindergarteners even got to tour one of the firefighting trucks. Students in the program also let kindergarteners try on some of their firefighting gear.

It was an excellent opportunity for the children to explore different career paths and to see firsthand what it takes to succeed in each field.
