May is Asian Pacific American Heritage month. Though we are well aware that since the start of the pandemic, many Asian Pacific Islanders and Americans have been the target of both hate speech and hate crimes. We know that this is nothing new in the history of the United States. However, Asian Pacific Islanders and Americans have contributed to every facet of our lives. Here is a video to share with students made by a Civil Rights Team Member from Mountain Valley High School that talks about navigating between two cultures: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6e7Xd299XcE&t=42s. In addition, if you would like to educate yourselves, Here are some resources from the Federal Asian Pacific American Council: https://www.fapac.org/AAPI-Resources as well as the Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Website https://asianpacificheritage.gov. Jen Raymond has compiled a display in the library featuring books about and by Asian Pacific Americans in the library for you to check out. Finally, if you would like to learn about how to be a better ally to members of our Asian Pacific Americans, please check out the Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine's #StopAsianHate campaign https://hhrcmaine.org/stopasianhate/.
