Dear Sanford School Department Families,
As we shared this spring, an important change is coming to our schools beginning with the 2026–2027 school year. A new Maine state law requires all public schools to prohibit student use of cell phones, smartwatches, and other personal electronic devices (PEDs) during the entire school day, from the first bell through dismissal.
The goal of this change is to reduce distractions, support student focus and learning, and promote stronger in-person connections and student well-being.
To support this transition, Sanford Schools has updated its policies, procedures, and student expectations. Students in grades 5–12 will use Yondr pouches, a secure magnetic locking system that allows students to keep their devices with them while ensuring they remain secured and unavailable for use during the school day. Students will lock their assigned pouch at the beginning of the day and unlock it at dismissal.

Families are invited to attend an informational session to learn more about the new expectations, ask questions, and hear about implementation plans. Both sessions will be recorded and shared with families who are unable to attend.
