As students return to school following the holiday break, we want to remind families that winter conditions make bus stop safety more important than ever. School bus safety is one of our district's highest priorities. Ledgemere staff is deeply committed to maintaining the safest possible transportation environment through regular vehicle maintenance, comprehensive driver training, and strict adherence to all safety protocols. With darker mornings and potentially icy roads, now is the perfect time for parents to review essential safety practices with their children.
Bus Safety Tips for Your Child
Before the Bus Arrives:
Arrive at least 5 minutes early and stand 10 feet (5 giant steps) back from the curb. The bus stop is not a place to run or play. Be ready to board when you see the bus coming by being outside of the car with all belongings. Being prepared ensures safety, visibility, and that no one is left behind.
Getting On and Off the Bus:
Wait until the bus comes to a complete stop and the driver signals it is safe to board, then use the handrails to prevent slips and falls. When unloading, allow the seats in front of you to exit first from left to right as in bus evacuations.
Crossing the Street:
NEVER walk behind the school bus. The driver can’t see you there, and neither can some motorists. Walk at least 10 feet in front of the bus, make eye contact with the driver, and give a thumbs-up to ensure both you and the driver see each other and it is safe to cross. If you drop something near the bus, tell the driver and do not pick it up yourself.
How We Can All Help Keep Students Safe
Please remember: when you see a school bus with flashing lights and an extended stop arm, you must stop. A few seconds of patience can save a child's life. If you witness a vehicle passing a stopped school bus, please report it to local law enforcement immediately. By working together, we can keep our students safe.
