The Starving Spartan Cafe is now up and running in the Life Skills Suite at Sanford High School. Students have been working hard to prepare meals and drinks for students and staff while developing specific life skills.
The cafe is open Tuesdays and Thursdays during Blocks 3 and 4. Block 3 is only available to staff, while Block 4 is open to both staff and students
The cafe is part of the student’s educational programming to learn important skills, including planning and preparing meals, budgeting, cooking, shopping, and cleaning, while also developing essential job traits as they practice different roles within the cafe.
Students learn to take orders, run a cash register, prepare food and drinks, and deliver the orders to customers while the cafe is open. Once the cafe closes for service, students clear the workspaces, tally up sales, conduct inventory, and balance the ledger.
Students are taught to show up for their shifts on time, wear proper uniforms, maintain proper sanitation procedures, and interact appropriately with customers, co-workers, and supervisors.
The cafe delivers orders to those staff members who find it challenging to come up and get refreshments. Pre-ordering is available by contacting lmiller@sanford.org or ahall@sanford.org.
