Today we are highlighting Carl J. Lamb School counselor Jen Scremin.

It’s National School Counseling Week! Every day this week, we will be highlighting counselors in our district who have gone above and beyond to help our students. Today we are highlighting Carl J. Lamb School counselor Jen Scremin.

Why did you become a school counselor?

I became a School Counselor because I want to be a partner in the success of students.

What do you love about being a school counselor?

I love learning from students, families and staff how resilient people can be and how we can all grow, learn and succeed.

What does a school counselor do?

As an Elementary School Counselor I do what I can to help students learn at their best. That might be helping with behavior management, emotion management, social skills or grief. It might be in small groups, lunch groups, individual or whole class. It might be making sure they are healthy and have glasses, or have appropriate winter gear for recess, or sneakers for PE class.

It might mean finding a motivator for a positive behavior plan, or tools for emotion regulation, or tools to help with focus. It might mean meeting with the student / their guardian(s)/ their teacher(s), their MTSS team / their IEP team / their bus driver to come up with a plan for success.

It means checking grades and making sure students are progressing.

It means helping out with assemblies and activities to promote student and family engagement, promote a positive climate and social/ emotional learning. It means I wear a lot of hats and will do what I can to help!
