April 26, 2021
Dear Parents, Guardians and families,
We want to take this opportunity to remind parents of an upcoming change to Maine’s immunization laws.
Signed in May of 2019, LD 798 becomes effective September 1, 2021. While this legislation does not change the immunizations needed to attend public school in Maine, it does eliminate exemptions for philosophical and religious reasons. Required State of Maine immunizations remain:
Grade level | Required immunizations |
Grades Pre-K - 6 | Diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, measles, mumps, rubella, polio, varicella |
Grades 7 - 12 | Diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, measles, mumps, rubella, polio, varicella, meningococcal disease |
Starting September 1, 2021, the only exemptions recognized by the State are medical exemptions and exemptions for qualifying students with an Individualized Education Plan. For more information regarding qualifying exemptions, please contact your child’s school nurse.
School | Nurse | Phone Number |
Carl Lamb Elementary School | Amy Humphrey | 608-8790 |
Sanford Pride Elementary (Willard School) | Deb Toothaker | 608-8767 |
Margaret Chase Smith School | Mary Boone | 206-1797 |
Sanford Middle School | Shawnda Lapointe | 324-3566 |
Sanford High School | Lynn Signore | 206-1708 |
At this time, COVID-19 immunizations are not included in State of Maine legislation. We will notify parents immediately if immunization requirements change.
Sincerely,
Steve Bussiere, Assistant Superintendent
