Firefighter (Two Options)

763 Basic Fire School AM Session * Credits:  2 Length:  Semester

Prerequisite: Students must be 16 years old by the start of semester 2.

This fast paced physically demanding course introduces students to firefighting. This course is mostly hands on with some classroom, homework and quizzes. Students will be taught how to Don and Doff turnout gear with Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), work off ladders, attack vehicle fires, attack building fires, attack flammable liquid and gas fires.

This course is 1 semester long. This course is designed for students to explore if firefighting is a career they may be interested in.  Students that have an 80 or higher and the instructor’s recommendation can apply for the EMT or Firefighter I & II in their senior year of high school. Students that pass the class will receive 2 high school credits. Students that meet all the objectives for the course will also be issued a Basic Firefighting Certificate.  Students must be able to participate in the physical requirements of the program and be medically cleared to wear a respirator. Students will be expected to work as a team while setting up ladders; climbing ladders to over 30 feet; chopping holes in roofs and dragging fire hose, all while wearing Personal Protective Clothing and SCBA air-pack.

767 Firefighter I and II PM Session * Credits:  4 Length:  Yearlong

Prerequisite: Students must be 16 years old before the first burn (November).   Priority consideration for applicants who are a member of a Junior Fire Department (and recommended by the Fire Chief or Designee) and/or have completed (or enrolled in) SRTC Basic Fire School, Emergency Medical Services, Health Occupations and/or Career Exploratory programs with an 80 average or better and/or recommendation of the instructor.

This one-year program is for students interested in being trained to the National Fire Protection Association’s 1001 standards for professional qualifications of fire fighters. This training is required by area fire departments before entering structure fires or attacking car fires. There will be a combination of classroom, fitness training, and hands-on experience using firefighting tools and equipment. Extensive reading and written work is also required.

Students must be able to participate in the physical requirements of the program and be medically cleared to wear a respirator. Basic Wildland Firefighting Certification can also be attained during this program. 

Successful completion of the course will allow the student to take the Firefighter I & II End Tests. Students that pass these tests will receive their State Certifications. State certifications will give them up to 6 college credits at SMCC.
